Brief Information about BIS, in January 1947, the Indian Standards Institution (ISI), as the then national standards body of India, was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. Its mandate was to prepare and promote standards for adoption by Indian industry. Later, its mandate was expanded to include Product Certification activity through the Indian Standards Institution (Certification Marks) Act, 1952.

In the mid-1980s it was felt necessary to confer a statutory status to ISI's functioning which led to the enactment of the BIS Act 1986. ISI was renamed as the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), to promote harmonious development of standardization, and quality certification of goods, with a clearly defined statutory powers. The Act has now been revised as BIS Act, 2016 and establishes BIS as the National Standards Body BIS - ISI Mark Scheme, there are several products covered and to know list of the products click on below link.

BIS - ISI Mark Scheme notified products will be tested by BIS accredited laboratories in India. BIS grants a licence based on successful assessment of the manufacturing infrastructure, production process and quality control and testing capabilities of a manufacturer through a factory inspection to its manufacturing premises. Based on the conformity of the product to its relevant standards is also established through third party laboratory testing or testing in the manufacturing premises or a combination of both.

To get a BIS - ISI Mark license of notified products, it will take around 6 months of lead time from Application submission to till the grant of licence and it may vary also.

Note:- After the grant of the BIS licence, manufacturer need with comply BIS marking guidelines.
